There are two ways to create a rune set from wood:
For further personalisation calculate your name rune and get the branch from a tree that is associated with your name rune. For the carving you are going to need a carving knife, hobby knife or a sharpened screw-driver and sand-paper to smoothen the cuts. Also get paint and a brush for colouring the runes. Traditionally they are dyed in red or ochre, if however you think a different colour is more appropriate or would work better for you, go ahead. Mix some of your blood into the paint before you start dyeing the runes. You should do all runes in one go, failing that, you can also do them by the aett. Meaning you carve and paint 8 runes per session. Before you start have everything you need ready for the carving and perform an opening rite to cleanse your working area. Select the first piece and start carving against the grain. This makes the rune more visible. During carving, visualise a stream of energy flowing from you into the rune, the colour of this energy should be that of the rune - check the Elder Futhark pages for the associated colours. When you've finished carving, take the paint and colour the rune while chanting its name. Now continue the carving for the remaining staves.
